Grading System

There is a complete grading system in place and students are encouraged to pursue the attainment of the coloured belts that begin with white and continue to black and beyond. Gradings are held on a quarterly basis and students are required to reach a definite standard before they are permitted to apply to be graded, the students instructor would decide this. Technical ability is not the only requirement; attitude, motivation, reliability, punctuality, courtesy, humility and respect are also taken in to consideration.

The awarding of a visible sign of achievement to students is unique to the martial arts. These signs are the coloured belts, ranging from white through to black. An important fact to remember is not what the colour of belt is, but rather, that the belt marks your achievement and is the result of your hard work and determination. No matter what the colour, all grades wear their belts with pride. The early grades, for which coloured belts are awarded, are called the 'Kyu' grades. The earning of the Kyu grades leads to the award of the black belt, which is further divided into 'Dan' gradings. Coloured belts awarded are as follows:

WHITE BELT - BEGINNER BLACK WITH WHITE STRIPE - 1st KYU
GOLD - 7th KYU BLACK BELT - 1st Dan
GREEN - 6th KYU BLACK BELT - 2nd Dan
PURPLE - 5th KYU BLACK BELT - 3rd Dan
BLUE - 4th KYU BLACK BELT - 4th Dan
RED - 3rd KYU BLACK BELT - 5th Dan
BROWN - 2nd KYU RED & BLACK STRIPE - Shihan Master Teacher
